Colour loves- rust and grey...

I had to go downtown today to find a birthday present for my brother-in-law and realized I am wholly incapable of shopping physical stores now.  Where once I gracefully navigated the throngs, now I am overwhelmed!  My online shopping skills have been so honed and delicately tuned to my own needs that the prospect of bustling malls full of people and piles of clothing and music and multiple-font signage just has me bewildered.  Never mind that shopping for the menfolk is difficult enough...I found myself carrying several random button-ups, unable to decide on patterns and sizes, and indeed whether I should just keep buying and then make returns later...argh!  Almost defeated, I think I came up with the usual present of grey on grey striping (he really likes neutrals- the stripes are rather daring).  At least there's some personality to the gift in a great book of essays on the topic of winter that I can't recommend enough.  I read it all the way home, and now I want it for myself too! The actual lectures are available here.

I really love the combination of grey and rust together, and I also love grey and chartreuse, and chartreuse and rust, so the three together are like...happy-making.  Let the Christmas shopping begin!

the dress...

So y'all know by  now that I was long thwarted in my desire for the d'Armee dress, featured in Anthropologie's September 2010 catalogue as the perfect understated dress with rocker-chic detailing.  I was instantly sold on it, but trusted my pennies to a hard and unfeeling blonde dame (she-who-shall-not-be-named) who led me on for almost a year before finally refunding my money, by which time the dress was completely and utterly sold out.  Well, a very kind and supremely generous gal (she-who-I-don't-know-if-she-wishes-to-be-named) was sweet enough to send me hers, to my everlasting gratitude and awesome karma stock (aw heck...thanks Shannon, both for the dress and all the styling ideas- there shall be the best kind of come-uppance whenever we decide on a mutual trade)!!

These pictures kinda suck, which is why it's taken so long to post 'em, but below are the many faces of d'Armee happiness!  Starting with the supercilious grin right out of the box!
d'Armee dress, right out of the box, Joe Fresh mustard flats
with tasseled orange floral scarf and tough-chick boots (and Big Bird tights....)
and my favourite layering with a silk blouse underneath...
with J Crew grey Blythe blouse and Indigo Water Row boots
with Joe Fresh blush silk blouse, thrifted belt, rust tights and Water Row boots
It may be just a dress, but it's such a pretty and uncomplicated and ungirly alternative to some of my more fussy get-ups.  Love.

Flannel freak!

Thrifted Tristan wool shirtcoat, Fornarina polka-dot pants, Market boots
I popped out early this morning to go to the post office, certainly not intending to be so colour-coordinated.  I was already wearing the rust hat to cover my bedhead following an even earlier outing for cat food- mostly I was obsessed with wearing this flannel-y wool shirt since I have become fully gaga for flannel in the last 24 hours.

Oh, it all started so innocently, and crept up so quietly I didn't even see it coming.  I guess you could say it started last winter, when Sally Jane Vintage made me fall in love with this flannel Orla Kiely dress:
Of course I never found one. Oh, yes, I half-heartedly picked up some discount beige flannel in the spring, as if to make one myself.  Ha. Cut to a few weeks ago when DaniBP posted a lovely and alluring fuzzy grey outfit set that reminded me just how gorgeous grey is on its own.  And I've tried to block it out, but I think I'm still drooling over this lovely yet impractically expensive cashmere J Crew Collection blouse:
available for $495 at Net-a-Porter!
Now things start to speed up...cut to last weekend when Madewell offered free shipping on any item and I pounced on this glorious green and grey flannel checked shirt (I thought it was mustard, but it's still delectable).

Cut to yesterday when the boutique near my workplace offered a Covet sample sale and I scored this delicious grey space-age-secretary dress for $40 (about 80% off).

The flannel shirt arrived yesterday evening too, and I immediately tried it on with a grey pencil skirt and I was in love.  So in love that I want more!!  More, I say!

What I wouldn't give to find this same shirt in a plain grey flannel.  That's all I ask. I spent the rest of the evening scouring the internet for anything similar.  Nada.  I've tried all the flannel-y places I could thing of- LL Bean, Land's End, J Crew, Gap and Old Navy, both children's and grownup sections...where else should I look?

In passing, the origin of the word obsess is apparently rooted in the Latin for besieged or occupied- I therefore have no agency in this activity.  I am merely the one possessed!

Origin: 1495–1505; < Latin obsessus, past participle of obsidēre to occupy, frequent, besiege, equivalent toob- ob- + -sid(ēre) combining form of sedēre to sit.  See more here

blue meanies...

J Crew trench, AA electric blue tights, Modern Vintage boots
vintage grey knit dress, suede bow brooc
I wanted to profile my fun electric blue tights, with super mod knit vintage dress and share them with the EBEW gang today. I've grown used to having to wear tights every day for months through winter, so I've begun trying to inject a little more creativity into leg wear.  I like to wear simpler shapes and neutrals with the bright tones, so as not to blind anyone!

Bully cat is caught in the act of being, well, I guess more of a fluffy grey meanie to the other fluffy grey cat (cowering off-camera).  heh.

Please pardon these recent camera/lighting/editing troubles- fuzzy and red-eyed we are.  I wish I could just pop out of doors for some decent natural light.  But alas.  Daylight 'savings' time means it is now cold and dark at 4:30 pm, and I do not rise from my slumber in the mornings until I absolutely have to!

recycled ragamuffin...

This week was so wildly busy I swear it only lasted about 2 days- in the underslept gloom of each morning, I guess I didn't feel very creative, because not only did I fail to document anything when I got home, but I wore each and every outfit in some form already last year around this time!  Does it count as recycling if you've never seen it though?! Ha!  Loophole!
Covet knit dress, Camper boots, mishmash of assorted other knits

I somehow never posted this one before, worn last November as well- I love this cozy and soft, laddered and layered knit dress.  It's from a sample sale of Covet pieces, and I love that the back is designed to look like it could be the front, with a little row of buttons.  It is a confused piece, eminently cozy, and fully reflects the needs of a crazed week!

This time I wore it with another transparent knit top in J Crew's Burnt Twig colour, with a matching silk scarf, and these boots (by the way, I love this gossamer wool top and I would give anything for some more!!)
My other recycled looks were this (from last October):

and this, from last December:
But I promises to do better next week, 'cause I felt bored in these...and what's the point if you feel bored.  I should get to do something fun everyday.  Like wear dresses that look like they're on backwards!
