Damn Green Dress Giveaway!

Okay, so in truth, I'm not giving away any damn dresses.  But I got your attention!

I didn't think I would really mark the passing of a year on my blog- it was something I started for myself to keep track of my obsessions and passing fancies, and to sort-of ensure I actually wore more of the things in my wardrobe. But you can't help feeling like you're in a conversation with a community, and it's so fun to share.  I'm happy so many of you have come along for the ride, and the highlight of my day is coming home (or sometimes peeking on my phone at work...shhhhh), curling up with a cup of tea, and seeing what you are thinking about, and desiring, and wearing- all the fabulous colour/pattern mixing that just makes getting dressed fun!

So in thanks for being there, and for future readers, I have a little present for y'all.  Since this all began with the reference to that one intangible green dress, the one that really embodies all those unattainable material loves that pass through our frame of vision, the first item is a DVD of the film Desk Set.
Wherein a crew of fabulous reference librarians, led by Katharine Hepburn, wear delightful dresses and bemoan the arrival of the first computer in the workplace.  The witty and wise Katharine is well-matched with the bumbling and infallible Spencer Tracy.

My favourite reads these days come from the folks at New York Review of Books Classics- they've been bringing back into print novels and non-fiction with unique stories and viewpoints, mostly from the mid-twentieth century.  I'm afraid I have accumulated quite a collection over the past several years, but every one has been an enjoyable revelation.
Wish Her Safe at Home was one of my favourite books last year- what downtrodden office worker hasn't dreamed of coming into a guilt-free inheritance and living the perfect life in a cozy old house- drinking tea in the afternoons and shopping for the genteel dresses that embody the ideal British countryside lifestyle?  Apparently that too can lead to madness and ruin, and I enjoyed every minute of it- the jacket blurb compares it to the Beales of Grey Gardens and rightly so.

And because one of my goals this spring is to get back into the jewellery studio and make stuff, there will also be a little surprise gift made from some wearable combination of silver and vintage materials...

So, if you would like to be part of the giveaway:
  • you should be a follower and leave a comment about a longed-for item that escaped you (or perhaps one you've actually found!) with your contact email.
  • I have always enjoyed finding new blogs through hearing about giveaways, so an added entry for posting the giveaway on your blog.  Just mention it in your comments!!
Random.org and I will pick a winner after Saturday, February 5th and contact you for your address.

On the topic, Lisa at Respect the Shoes is also celebrating a year in blogging with a beautiful Etsy necklace and a sweet gift card.  Be sure to check her site if you haven't already- she's got great style and a fabulous sense for colour/pattern mixing.

  1. Hi! What a thoughtful giveaway! That movie sounds fantastic :). Hmmm longed for item that got away from me would be the jcrew penelope mary janes in the green + gold version. I stalked the website, then they went on sale, missed out on them, one day they popped back in my size, and then the order got cancelled :(

    I am a follower of course :) I see my icon! whatjesslikes(at)live(dot)ca

  3. Time sure does fly when you're having fun :) Congrats on your one year blogiversary, it's been such a pleasure keeping up! There are, sadly, more than a few pieces that got away that still give me anxiety attacks when I think about them. It's extremely hard to pick, but I'll give you my two most wanted: The green houndstooth Gramercy coat from J.Crew, and the Anthro Subcontinent Dress.
I follow with Google reader, of course, and my email is littlegirlbigcloset(at)gmail(dot)com

  4. Hi Sarah, I've truly enjoyed the ride! Thanks for hosting a lovely giveaway. I am of course a loyal follower (well doh!). Ahhh, the one that got away will have to be the Anthro Darjeeling skirt. I fell head over heels in love with that skirt after seeing it on Jen from Vintageglammz ... and the Spinning Lace Dress after seeing how Jen made it look so dreamy and romantic. Sigh ... *sniffles* I'm getting all choked up just talking about it.

  5. Congrats on the anniversary! How exciting!

I am a follower. The 'one that got away' would have the be the anthropologie cartography cardigan. It seems like I waited a moment too long to buy it, then it was just too late. I searched and searched for it with no luck:( Maybe one day!

  11. Ooh! Great giveaway! I am a long time follower and there are a few things that "got away" but one in particular that I long for is a dress I purchased and returned, foolishly. It is by a now-defunct line called Jovovich Hawk and the dress is "Roslyn." It is a simple black shift with a ruffle at the bust and some straps that give it an edge. I search and search but have yet to track one down in my size on ebay.

  12. Congratulations on sticking with it for one whole year - we're glad you did!

Fabulous giveaway - a movie, book and surprise - what more could you ask for!

Longed for items...hmmm... I have often made the mistake in the past of selling things on eBay that I really love, and then regretting it afterwards, wishing I had them back - a fur-trimmed 1940's coat, a Victorian beaded pincushion, a pair of Edwardian kidskin slippers...

  13. Congrats to you! I've been seriously considering starting my own blog for the same reasons you mentioned, but I'm stuck on what to name it! I'm so bad at naming things. Two of my cats went months without names because I couldn't decide! But they both ended up with great names that suited their personalities, so it was worth it in the end. :)

Fun giveaway - so personal! I love Hepburn and Tracy movies, but I haven't seen this one. I'd have to say my current longed for item is the Stormy Seas necklace. Of course I didn't actually discover it until long after it was sold out, but now I swear I see it everywhere, taunting me! Everytime it comes up on ebay it sells for like 3x its original price, so I guess I'm not the only one coveting that piece! :)

  14. I just found you, but am now a follower.

I ADORE Katharine Hepburn (and like to pretend I'm named for her, but not quite...) but I've never seen this film. Just finished re-watching (for the zillionth time) Bringing Up Baby last night.

An item that's escaped me? Well, it's one I've never actually found. Flat, tall, brown leather boots in a triple narrow width for less than $300. The search continues!

  16. Congrats and fun giveaway--I have never seen that film! I can't wait to see your jewelry it sounds very inventive. I love mixed media.
A regret is that we had a mold infestation and I had to get rid of a silver 60s dress my mom wore for her go-go dancing job (when she was set up on a blind date with my dad...married 6 months later!). But as far as current/missed in-store longings go...I suffer intensely for a very short period, and then just let it go into the ether....sometimes, after I have released my grip, I am randomly united with the item which is always thrilling!

  17. oh oh oh, pick me! My "one that got away" was the Grasby Gardens dress...so pretty, and I found it in a store without realizing that it was a sale item; the $200 price tag was too steep so I put it back. Only found out my mistake later and have been hunting it ever since!
